The late summer of 2015 will see the debut of a new Lupin III television series – the first series to star Lupin since 1985. Reflecting its setting, the anime will debut in Italy on August 29th before airing in Japan in October.
Lupin III fans will note that the titular thief now has a blue coat, following his earlier appearances in green (first series and some OVAs), red (the second series as well as most films and television specials) or pink (third series).
For those unfamiliar with the series, it’s about Arsène Lupin III, who is the grandson of the gentleman thief, Arsène Lupin, and is considered the world’s greatest thief. He is known for announcing his intentions to steal valuable objects by sending a calling card to the owners of his desired items. His right-hand man and closest ally is Daisuke Jigen, an expert marksman who can accurately shoot a target in 0.3 seconds. Although Lupin and Jigen usually work as a two-man team, they are often joined by Goemon Ishikawa XIII, a master swordsman whose sword can cut anything, and sometimes, Fujiko Mine, a femme fatale and Lupin’s love interest in the series.
The website for the series contains messages from all of the crew working on the new anime series. I found this translation from the Chief Director (otakuusamagazine.com):
“The Lupin we watched for the first time forty years ago was way different from the kid-centric animation that had come before. It had a huge impact on adult fans. For both those who remember that series and those who don’t, I want to create an exciting anime with both real and fantastic feeling. I want to make a Lupin where the hardboiled, comical, cool and nonsensical all work together.”
There are going to be 26 episodes for this new series.
It looks like it’s going to be an action-filled, but light-hearted anime series. Watching the trailer, I was reminded of Trigun and cowboy bebop quite a bit, the three series seem to share a fair few characteristics. The style is similar too.
Seems we might have a good new series to watch.
